January 2009 Wrap-up

February 3, 2009

in General Training

As promised, to keep myself accountable to the goals I’ve set for this year, I’m going to do a monthly post detailing my progress. Without further ado, here’s a review of how I did in January.

Run More Races

The goal I’ve set here is to run at least 6 races, up from 5 in 2008. So far, I’ve already run one, a 10K in January which was one of my running club’s monthly races. And I did pretty well, running about a 8:04 pace, which is really good for me, especially this soon into getting back into more serious training following my November marathon. I’m going to give myself an ‘A’ so far on this goal.

Set a Half Marathon PR

I can’t give myself a grade on this one yet since I haven’t raced a half this year yet. I will say though that I’m three weeks into my training plan though and it seems like it’s going pretty well. Also, I’ve registered for two halfs already: the Colfax Half in May, and the Denver Half in October.

Cross Train Consistently

I’m going to give myself an ‘A’ on this one too. I cross-trained at least twice a week every week in January. These were mostly stationary bike workouts, but I actually got in the pool once as well. I also took 3 yoga classes. Not a bad effort.

Strength Train Consistently

I guess I’ll give myself a B- on this one. I’ve been doing both the 100 pushups program and the 200 situps program fairly consistently, although I don’t think I’ve hit 3 workouts of each program each week. I got through week 6 of the hundred pushups, but couldn’t ‘do the hundred’ so I restarted with week 3. I am getting kind of sick of the pushups though, so I might start throwing in some assisted chin-ups as an alternate arm workout soon just for a change of pace.

I’m doing better on the situps. I just finished week 6 and will do my final test today to see if I can ‘do the 200′.

I’ve also been doing some very light strength work once a week: wall slides, single arm bent-over rows, calf raises, and lunges, but only once a week. These were all exercises recommended in Run Less, Run Faster. I’m going to start adding a bit more weight to increase the intensity.

Do Something Different

No score on this one yet either. I did try to talk a friend into training for a triathlon but no luck yet. I will start looking into either a summer duathlon or see if I can put together a relay team for a spring or summer race.

How are you all doing on your training goals so far this year?

hmmm…well, putting myself in the B- category. I have been running, cycling, yoga and weight training consistantly and applied for a yoga scholarship. I did one bike race though, I guess I can give myself an A for that!
Still would like to do some trail runs but nothing done yet..

Sounds like you’re scoring yourself a little harshly, Fit Mommy. Especially since you did so well in your bike race!

For “do something different” you should consider a snowshoe race, a lot of fun and tough!

Great idea, Run Colorado. Last time I tried to go snowshoeing though, there was hardly any snow. Either I’ll have to go further up or wait until we get dumped on closer to home.

Oh, you are so disciplined!! I have not done so well with the consistency as you have, and I definitely need to step up my strength training. But I did alright so far on my 5K goals, so I’m happy about that.
