I don’t think I’ve mentioned this in a post, but I ended up missing my scheduled goal race - the Denver Half-Marathon - because of a death in the family. As much as I love to train and race, family matters will always take priority with me.
All-in-all, I ended up missing about two weeks of training - no running, no cross-training, nothing. Highly unusual for me.
So, now I’m trying to resume training. It’s been a bit difficult, although I guess I should have anticipated this (according to Cool Running, “it takes about two weeks of ‘retraining’ to come back from every week in which you do no exercise“).
I resumed running last Friday, doing 3 slow miles, followed by another slow 9 on Saturday. On Sunday, my quads were really sore, so I took the day off. So far this week, I ran a slow 3 miles on Monday, did about 30 minutes on an elliptical on Tuesday, ran about 2 1/2 miles of intervals on Wednesday + about another 1 1/2 between the warmup and cooldown, and then ran another slow 3 today. I plan to continue about like this for another couple of weeks - mostly slow runs, with maybe one short speed session per week, a bit of cross-training, and a longer weekend run to get back into the swing of things.
In about mid-November, I’ll resume training in earnest. My goals at this point for 2008 are to run a spring half-marathon and to run the New York Marathon in November.
