Winter Running Gear Part 2
In my last post (Winter Running Gear Part 1) I talked a little bit about screw shoes, Yaktrax, and other accessories to help keep you from slipping when running on snowy and icy surfaces.
I’ve since done a little more searching and found out about a couple more options:
- Grip-ons - ice and now traction cleats you wear over your shoes (much like STABILicers)
- Get-A-Grip - a similar product to Grip-ons and STABILicers, but looks a little flimsy to me
Anyone used either of these products?
I also wanted to mention to those of you that may not have read the comments on the last post that davegill55 from The MS Runner wrote to say that he has worn the Yaktrax and he thinks that “they work real well on hard packed snow, but not so great on ice.” Thanks for the comment, Dave!
While searching for alternatives to screw shoes, I came across a running shoe meant specifically for running on snow and ice - Icebugs. Icebugs come in several models, most of which seem to feature carbide tips. I really like the idea of having something built right into my shoe rather than having to slip something over it or screw something into it, but I don’t think I can justify the price ($109.95 - $149.95 at REI). Anyone tried these? Or know where you can get them at a discounted price?
To continue on with the ‘what to wear on your feet in the winter’ theme, I’m going to mention something that’s probably pretty obvious - don’t wear thin cotton socks on a cold day! Yes, I made that mistake yesterday, and although there was no harm done, my feet were much more uncomfortable then they had to be in the 18 degree weather. I’d suggest going with some wool running socks instead - something like Smartwool that’s a combination of wool, spandex and nylon keeps your feet warm and dry.
And speaking of keeping your feet dry, if you’re running in wet weather, you might want to consider investing in some waterproof trail running shoes. Not only will these keep your feet dry, they should give you a better grip on the road that you’d get with typical road shoes.
Hope you’re enjoying your running, however the weather is treating you.

Thanks for the plug!
One thing on winter gear that I have a problem with, are pants. I’m tall (6′4″) and my waist is 34″ with an inseam of 36″. The only pants that I can find long enough for me, are XL which is usually 38″-40″ waist. Any suggestions?

Dave,
This is the closest I could find: http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/RRM878/
This inseam is only 34″ but it does come in various waist sizes, including a 32-34″. It may be a bit better than what you’ve been finding, anyway.
Anyone else have any suggestions?
