The Runner’s High and Health Benefits

November 16, 2007 By: kch Category: Health Benefits No Comments →

According to a recently released University of Iowa study,

Opioids, the body’s chemicals that create the “runner’s high,” may help save the heart from heart attack damage. - Source: WebMD

In the study, one group of rats ran on a treadmill for 5 days, and a control group lounged around on another treadmill during the same period. On the 6th day, the rats’ hearts were removed and heart attacks were induced. Testing results showed that the hearts of the running rats had less heart attack damage than the sedentary rats.

My conclusions?

  1. Studies continue to support what most runners intuitively know - running is good for you and for your heart.
  2. It’s hard to be a rat.
